Why it’s harder to stay in shape over time

  • by

If staying in shape feels harder than it used to, you’re not imagining things. Your body changes over time, and those changes can affect how easily you maintain your fitness.

One major factor is metabolism. As you age, your metabolism tends to slow down, meaning your body burns fewer calories at rest. This can make it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it.

Muscle mass also naturally decreases over time, especially if you’re not actively maintaining it. Since muscle burns more calories than fat, losing it can further slow your metabolism.

Hormones also play a role. Changes can affect how your body stores fat, builds muscle, and manages energy.

That said, lifestyle still matters a lot. Staying active, eating balanced meals, and getting enough sleep can all support your body as it changes.

The key is adjusting your approach. Instead of relying on intense or unsustainable routines, focus on consistency. Regular movement, strength training, and simple habits tend to be much more effective in the long run.
